Is Television Quality, Not Quantity, Really the Problem?

TV BabysitterOn Monday, the New York Times covered a study published in the journal Pediatrics that found a child’s consumption of ‘pro-social’ media, which encourages empathy, is inversely proportional to aggressive behavior towards others. The authors of the study thus concluded that exposing children to less adult TV and modifying other potentially harmful media habits may be able to improve a child’s social skills and motivate a more appropriate response when confronted with conflict. According the study’s lead author, “the take-home message for parents is it’s not just about turning off the TV; it’s about changing the channel.”

Food Addiction: a ‘Legitimate’ Concern?

What if I were to tell you that a friend of mine was attempting to break the nasty habit of going to the restroom? Would you consider him crazy? What if I went on to explain that because he habitually spend such an inordinate amounts of time in the restroom that he is often unable to bath, sometimes neglects to eat and has been known to forget to lock the front door in a rush to be on time for this or that? Is he still crazy in their desire to quit? What if I then told you that a specific health condition made using the restroom an extremely painful and laborious process that often left him physically and psychologically battered and unable to be a participate in life? Considering all this, would his desire to quit using the bathroom still seem odd and unjustified?

Fighting Inflammation with Salmon and Sweet Potatoes

FireVeggiefeed was initially conceived as an outlet for me to express my opinion on our current food environment and to further my study of holistic nutrition. Lately it seems that the majority of my posts have been more focused on the former and I think it is about time to share a little bit more on the later. That being said, here is the initial draft of a report I recently wrote in for Food Therapy, a class predicated on utilizing food therapeutically to heal myself and others. Enjoy!

Fighting Inflammation with Salmon and Sweet Potatoes

The human body is truly miraculous. It has the ability to perform multiple high level functions integral to survival (nutrient absorption, impulse transmission and muscle contraction) while simultaneously managing multiple unbelievably intricate homeostatic mechanisms that allow the body to withstand the increasingly abrasive environment in which we live (temperature regulation, immune function and tissue repair). However, if we neglect to provide it with the nutrients essential for survival while periodically allowing it to recover from the stress we place upon it, the body can break down and enter a cycle of unsavory adaptations that may impair our health and our ability to participate in the activities that we enjoy. To obtain the level of physical and mental wellbeing for which we all strive, we must develop a fundamental understanding of the vital biological mechanisms that allow us to excel. To stay spiritually and emotionally connected to our environment we must develop a keen awareness of our body’s unique needs and the choices that may hinder our ability to enjoy all that life has to offer.
